Lemnos, the island of Hephaestus on the northern part of the Aegean Sea, is the eighth largest island of Greece. It has many mountain and seaside villages; the port and the principal town is Myrina. Myrina has two neighborhoods, the Roman Shore and the Turkish Shore, with the castle overseeing the town.
Lemnos is a volcanic, yet verdant island. In ancient times, it was considered the island of Hephaestus, probably due to the volcano of the island.
It's an ideal destination for calm family vacation, for those who want to relax, to visit the only desert in Europe, walk into the castle while take pictures of little deer.
It has about 100 beaches, most of them sandy and with shallow waters. Riha Nera is one of the most popular beaches, Avlonas, a quiet beach with sand and a few pebbles, Agios Ioannis, Skidi Evgatis, the beautiful beach of Thanos, Mikro Fanaraki, Keros and Kokkinovrachos.
It's worth visiting the Archeological Museum, the Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge-Fishing, where you will learn a lot about this field, the Petrified Forest of Lemnos, the Cave of Philoctetes, and the Hot Springs of Therma, in a green setting, near Myrina.
